THE FIRST WOODWORKING PROJECTS students do can wet their appetite for future years. To help keep your students interested and keen to continue into their future years, here are some project ideas.
NOTE – For international visitors, year 7 & 8 are students that are approximately 13 to 15 years old.
Birdhouse

Not the most exciting for students of this age, however they do get to get the hammer and nails out which is what students generally like.
Acoustic Speaker for Phone/Tablet

You can work design into the project if you have the scope for it. These are a few prototypes I made with the idea for students to cut the inside with a scroll saw or coping saw. The hole in the top is done with a jig and a forstener bit on the drill press. You can also make vertical ones.
Chopping Board
Good for getting students used to clamping, different timbers and even shapes depending on how complex a design is chosen.
Pencil Box

And oldie but a goodie. Especially if you want a quick project with little preparation required.
If you have a laser cutter or CNC you could use these to customise the project and add a little design work.
Toolbox

Another classic. This was one of the first things I made at trade school so i tend to stay away from it, but it can make a good project.
